Clubhouse vs Copycats: Can the tech newbie survive its competition?

It was only a matter of time. Copycatting in the tech world is nothing new. And the newbie app, Clubhouse, was bound to face copycats and clones. A recent report found 33 social audio apps now exist with social giants like Slack, Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, and LinkedIn entering the audio race. With lesser-known apps like Sonar, Fireside Chat, Chalk, and Discord hoping for a slice of the audio pie.

In a competitive landscape, only the best social networks survive. Will Clubhouse outlast them?

But first what is Clubhouse…

Unless you’ve been living outside the audio bubble, you’ll know Clubhouse is a (currently) invite-only, audio social media tool. Clubhouse allows people from around the world can connect, speak, and listen. On the app, in a podcast style format, people attend ‘rooms’ and speak on a range of different topics. Attendees can listen in and, if the speakers allow, have their say too.

Appearances from influencers, billionaires and tech leaders––like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk––have led to explosive growth.

Launched in March 2020, the app now has 2 million weekly users, and as of Feb 2020, has 10 million downloads: not bad for an ‘exclusive’ platform. Its gradual release onto Android is set to only…
