How Nature Can Help Us To Be More In Tune

What can migrating birds teach us about our own lives?

Nature is incredible.

This morning my husband and I watched whales breaching off the coast.

Every year 35,000 whales migrate through the Gold Coast –– having travelled on a 5000 km journey from Antarctica. They use the warm waters as a nursery for their newborn calves.

They’re not the only animals to undertake incredible journeys.

Recently my Mum told me about Godwit birds.

They have one of the longest migrations on earth.

Every year they fly non-stop from Alaska to New Zealand –– a whopping 12,000 km away.

No one knows how they do it

Scientists have discovered Godwits' light bones and curved wings help them fly long distances.

But their navigation skills are still a mystery.

Celestial hints from the stars and moon appear to play some role, but now there’s a theory –– and it’s incredible.

The birds may use the earth’s magnetic field lines to chart their course.

They don’t just feel or sense the magnetic lines, they may even be able to see them too.
