It was the heyday of digital nomad living. We were remote working before it became popular –– when people thought we were a little crazy and we felt like we were in on the best secret of all.

While working in vegan cafes, lying in hammocks, learning to surf, and hopping on and off planes every few weeks, we met new people every day. People we never otherwise would have crossed paths with.

There was the surfer dude from Australia, who lived in a castle in Ireland and was obsessed with the Dalai Lamma. There was the American English teacher who both loved rugby and the idea of getting off the Fillippono Island we were living on. There was Fernando –– our driver in Sri Lanka –– who almost ran us off the road more times than I can count. There was the Thai family and their German shepherd, Gao, who almost adopted us as our own.

And then there was the monk in Cambodia.
