Member-only story
Your past story might be getting in the way of living in the now
Your story is irrelevant to who you are and where you want to go
We all have a story.
A series of life events that led to the moment we’re in now.
For some, that story is difficult. For others, it’s quite pleasant. For most, there are parts we like, and others we’d rather forget.
But regardless of what your story is: it doesn’t have to define you.
Our society encourages individual stories
Humans love storytelling.
But not all humans celebrate individual stories.
Many cultures think of themselves collectively. Their stories unite them as one. In tribal communities, for example, connections among the group are far superior to what happens to the individual.
In the West, however, individualism is the dominant ideology.
What has, or hasn’t happened to you (or what you have or haven’t done) is often thought to be who you are.
Your list of achievements, your job title, your car, how many rooms your house has, the countries you’ve visited, traumatic events, your abilities: these all supposedly build a picture of you.
